IMS DS58.5 Puck Diffuser Screen

Fits these machines

A puck screen sits on top of the tamped coffee, under the shower screen. It spreads the arriving water across the whole bed instead of letting it drill in at one point, and it stops spent grounds being pulled back up into the group when the pump stops.

IMS’s DS58.5 is the 58mm member of that range: an AISI 301 photo-etched membrane filtering to 150 µm, pierced by 253 holes of Ø2.4mm. IMS specifies it by tamper rather than by brand — “Compatible with filter baskets for 58 / 58.4 mm tampers”.

Why the name says 58.5 and the standard says 58

The screen is a touch wider than the tamper it pairs with, on purpose. A tamper has to travel down inside the basket; a puck screen only has to sit on the coffee and stay put, so it is sized to reach the basket wall rather than clear it. That is why you will see it sold as a “58.5mm” screen for 58mm machines and why the two numbers are not in conflict. This site keys it to the 58mm standard, which is the format of every machine it is listed against.

Four manufacturers name it, for four different reasons

Unusually, IMS argues for this part separately on each brand page, and the arguments are worth reading because they are not the same argument:

Read together: on a Silvia the value is mostly at the start of the shot, protecting the puck from an aggressive pump. On an E61 machine it is mostly at the end, when the three-way valve pulls backwards and drags fines into the group. Same part, two different problems.

Fitment

Cross-referenced to the machines of the four brands IMS names, all of which this database records as 58mm from their own manufacturer documentation. IMS’s Gaggia page is careful to exclude the small domestic models — “Gaggia Viva, Carezza, and Gran Gaggia often use a smaller 53mm group head” — and neither Gaggia machine listed here is one of those.

Not cross-referenced: La Marzocco, Lelit, the 58mm Brevilles and the Flair 58. They are all 58mm machines and the screen would very likely suit them, but IMS’s pages for those brands do not mention a puck screen, and this database follows the source’s own wording rather than extending it by size logic.

The 51mm version of the same product is the DS51, which IMS names for De’Longhi and La Pavoni.
