## Notes

La Pavoni's own tamper for its lever range — stainless steel, glossy finish,
83mm tall, and a **51.2mm** tamping face.

## Why a 51mm tamper on a "52mm" machine

This is the single most confusing thing about buying La Pavoni accessories, and
it is worth stating plainly because all three numbers you will encounter are
correct and they measure different things:

- **52 mm** — what La Pavoni's machine spec tables give as the "filter holder
internal diameter (with filter)". It describes the holder with the basket
  seated in it.
- **52 mm** — the basket's own internal body. IMS gives "Body: Ø 52 mm
Internal" for its [B60 competition basket](/baskets/ims-b60-competition-2-cup-la-pavoni/),
the series it assigns to post-millennium La Pavoni.
- **51.2 mm** — this tamper's face. IMS independently specifies "Tamper:
Ø 51 mm" for the same B60 basket.

A tamper is *supposed* to be smaller than the basket it goes into — it has to
clear the wall to reach the coffee. So the roughly one-millimetre gap is the
design, not a mismatch, and it is why third-party sellers market La Pavoni
tampers as "51mm" or "51.5mm" while La Pavoni's machine pages say 52mm. Both
camps are quoting a real number; they are just quoting different ones.

If you want the general version of this trap, it is the same one the
[58mm standard](/guides/58mm-is-not-one-standard/) sets — a single millimetre
figure on an espresso part can refer to the tamper seat, the basket body, or
the holder, and buying on the number alone is how people end up with something
that does not fit.

## What it fits

La Pavoni states the tamper is for "all Lever coffee machines", and the
Europiccola Lusso, Professional Lusso, Stradivari Lusso and Esperto Abile each
state "Type: Lever Espresso coffee machine" on their own La Pavoni pages — so
the chain is entirely from the manufacturer.

Vintage pre-millennium La Pavoni levers are a different format and are not
covered here. Note also that La Pavoni sells a separate tamper for its
**Semi-Pro** (pump) machines; that one is not this part and is not for the
lever range.
