# Why 58mm baskets don't fit Breville machines

> Breville and Sage machines use a 54mm portafilter, not the 58mm standard — so 58mm baskets and tampers don't fit. Why, and the 54mm parts that do.

---

It's the single most common fitment mistake: someone buys a "standard" 58mm basket, tamper or bottomless portafilter for a Breville and it simply won't seat. The reason is size. **Breville home machines use a 54mm portafilter** — not the 58mm commercial standard that La Marzocco, Rancilio, Lelit, Gaggia and most prosumer machines share. Four millimetres is the whole difference between a part fitting and not. (A few of Breville's commercial-style machines are the exception — more below.)

## Breville is 54mm (and Sage is the same)

Breville's portafilter is **54mm**, a size essentially unique to Breville among common machines. In the UK and Europe these exact machines are sold under the **Sage** brand — same machines, same model names, same 54mm portafilter — so everything here applies to the Sage-badged equivalents too. A 58mm basket will not drop into a 54mm portafilter, and a 54mm basket rattles loose in a 58mm one; there is no adapter that makes them interchange.

It is worth being precise about *why*, because the obvious arithmetic is the wrong arithmetic. The gap is not the 4mm between the two nominal sizes: those numbers describe the **tamper**, and a tamper is not the part that has to fit through anything. What has to fit is the basket’s **body** — and IMS publishes both. A 58mm B70 basket has a Ø60mm body; the 54mm B62.5 has a Ø54mm body. The real obstruction is **6mm**, not 4mm, and it is a different measurement than the one on the box. See [why “58mm” isn’t one standard](https://espressofit.com/guides/58mm-is-not-one-standard/).

## So what *does* fit a Breville?

Only parts made for the 54mm format. The good news is Breville publishes its own OEM sizes clearly, so the fitment is well-documented. On the basket side, the main choice is single-wall vs dual-wall (see [single- vs dual-wall baskets](https://espressofit.com/guides/single-vs-dual-wall-baskets/)) — both in 54mm. For a tamper, you want a [54mm tamper](https://espressofit.com/guides/tamper-sizes/), not 58mm.

## And the one people keep looking for: VST

VST precision baskets have a reputation as *the* upgrade, so a lot of Breville owners go looking for a 54mm one. There isn’t a 54mm VST basket, and VST rules it out on its own store page: *“VST Filters DO NOT fit 49, 53 or 54mm portafilters.”* The whole VST range is 58mm.

The nearest equivalent for this format is IMS’s **B62.5** series, which IMS describes as “a dedicated line for 54mm group heads found in the Barista Express, Bambino, Pro, and Touch models” — those are the IMS baskets listed above. ## The exception worth knowing

Breville Dual Boiler, Breville Oracle, Breville Oracle Dual Boiler, Breville Oracle Jet and Breville Oracle Touch use a **58mm** portafilter instead — built around a commercial-style group rather than Breville's 54mm home format. So for these, standard 58mm baskets and tampers are what you want. Everything else in Breville's home line is 54mm; when in doubt, check the specific machine's page rather than assuming.
